A Healthy and Active Vacation

Currently, I am on a wonderful vacation up in the mountains enjoying the beautiful outdoors. But while on vacation, I always get worried about the meals I will be having each day. This time I was in charge of meals and got to cook for the family, which was a lot of fun.

When I used to go on vacations, I would eat everything in site and wouldn’t make the smartest choices… but not these days. I made sure to keep all of our meals well-balanced. For breakfast, we had egg burritos with egg whites, whole wheat tortillas, all the fixings and turkey bacon (keeping it light, but still delicious).

For lunch, we had whole wheat turkey sandwiches filled with veggies and avocado. I had a big piece of watermelon to go right along with it.

I still enjoyed some guilty pleasures like s’mores and red vines! What is a camping trip without a s’more?!? I’m not a big fan of marshmallows, but I love my s’mores with dark chocolate and natural peanut butter!
When camping, it’s never too hard to be active. You have your gym right in your backyard. I love waking up early in the mountains and going out for walks, hikes and/or jogs.

I believe camping is one of the most fun and inexpensive vacations that you can have and it’s also healthy and relaxing. So far on our trip we have been extremely active. We have woken up early and climbed some challenging hills, rode our mountain bikes, gone on hikes and I’ve even gotten in three boot camp sessions! All you need is some motivation, free weights and a yoga mat to get in one sweaty outdoor session!

I also had the opportunity to relax and read. Without the television, radio or any technology around, it has forced me to slow down. It hasn’t been easy because the first day I was bored out of my mind, but it always takes me a day or two to get into “chill mode”. I love going on long walks with Bosco, but at home I never have time. Besides that, one of the greatest pleasures thus far has been not looking at a CLOCK!

I have really enjoyed my time up here in the mountains and can’t wait to see how the rest of the week unfolds. I love treating my vacations like a healthy and active retreat!
