Books that will inspire you

In my last blog post, I highlighted several self-help books in an effort to assist women in sticking with their New Year’s resolutions. Motivational books, however, don’t always have to be filled with how-to’s or lists. Inspirational stories can focus on a particular person’s journey or they can teach you something new, make you want to be a better person, and empower you and make you say, “I can do this.” Hopefully these books will make you want to get up, get out, make a difference and take charge of your life.

“Take Back Your Life” by Wendy Ida: This is not your average fitness book. Yes, it includes tips and tricks to lose weight in 90 days gauranteed just like countless other weight loss programs. But, this is about more than dropping a few dress sizes. Ida speaks to the needs of women whose lives have spun out of control, and she teaches women how to reinvent themselves. Unlike other exercise products, she shares her life experiences and tells us it is “never too late to take charge of your life.” This book will help motivate you to surpass your potential and reach your own unique greatness.

“Enjoy Every Sandwich” by Lee Lipsenthal: Live each day as if it were your last. That’s Lipsenthal’s philosophy. This heartfelt and inspirational memoir is a beautiful and deeply personal account of one doctor’s life journey after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. For those who have in one way or another been affected by cancer, this is a must-read. For all of us, Lipsenthal teaches us to appreciate the gift of life and live it to the fullest, because tomorrow is never promised.

“AWOL on the Appalachian Trail” by David Miller: Do you need a little push to help you make a lifelong dream come true? Here’s one. Miller left his job, family and friends to fulfill his vision of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail. In this book, he richly describes the scenery, isolation and inspiration that fueled his quest, as well as what it feels like to pursue a dream. The passages in this book are personal, full of adventure and will leave you wondering why you haven’t gone after your lifelong dream yet.

“99 Things You Wish You Knew Before Stressing Out” by Lauren E. Miller: So many of us define our self-image through the media, mirrors and the perceptions of others. In this book, Miller shares her personal story about undergoing a double mastectomy and gives advice on how to find a healthy self-image. Miller recounts enduring intensive chemotherapy, losing her hair and going through a divorce. However, she doesn’t let any of these things define her. In fact, she says these experiences unleashed a sense of inner freedom that transformed her daily life. This book is truly empowering and is sure to help you connect to your inner peace and self-acceptance.
