Designated “Dieter”

Ben and I recently attended a Halloween party that was pretty far from our home. It was a fun costume party and we knew there would be a lot of drinking and yummy food there. Beforehand we decided I would be the designated driver so we would get home safe and sound.

Sometimes people shirk away from being the Designated Driver or “DD”, but I actually think it’s a great way to stay on track with healthy eating when you attend a party or social event. I even thought up the term “Designated Dieting” as a way to remind myself I’m doing more than just not drinking at the party.

Parties, happy hours and other social events often are full of temptations and alcohol is only one of them! When I am drinking I get a lot friendlier with the chips and dip. Also, I am the first person to suggest a late night drive-thru run on the way home from a night of dancing.

But, if I am sober I can choose my party eats a little better. Don’t get me wrong – I still indulge! I ate a piece of this cake at that party and enjoyed pizza and chips, but I didn’t get out of control with it and I saved a lot of calories by not drinking all night.cake

You can be the designated driver/dieter and still have fun. When we got to the party I had one drink – the Sangria everyone was raving about. Then, I switched to diet Coke (not water, I’m not a saint!). I had a great time and didn’t wake up feeling hung over or bloated the next day.monica - dd

I may volunteer to be the designated dieter driver all the time! Maybe…
