Fit Mommy’s “Rest Day” Play With Kids

My children love to be active with me! On a recent trip to the hardware store I was able to pick up one 10-foot long plastic PVC pipe –which then became two 5-foot long pipes that are kid size. These poles have thrilled my children because it makes them part of “my world”. We do side bends, windmills, jump overs, obstacle courses… and of course they make up activities to do with them as well!

Because I love to compete, my next invitational is one month away and am currently training 5 days a week! Phew! It’s a lot and I love it…I also look forward to my rest days because those are the times I can spend with the kids in the garage “working out” but not really…mostly we just fool around together!

So, the following are some suggestions of exercises you can do with your kids anytime anywhere:

Handstands. Children can walk their feet up the wall and hold it for ten seconds.
Jump Rope: Get age appropriate ropes for them or offer a hula hoop- which they can then jump as if it were a jump rope. They can also just practice jumping over sticks!
Play Catch with a Medicine Ball: Mommy is in a sit up position and the child can throw the ball to you!
“Pull-ups”: For the kids, tie a stuffed animal to a pole in front of them and have them hang from a bar and kick it with their feet! They love that.
Play Lizard on a Rock: The adult goes to child’s pose and the child will then sit on mom’s back and lay over her with their head near mom’s neck.

These are just a few examples of things you can do with your kids to stay active and to encourage them to be active. I’ve found that as long as they are interested in the activity they will do just about anything!
