Life Lessons for Moms: Empowering Our Kids

10 years from now, we will look back on these photos and laugh!
How Ryan begged me to haul is bike to the park even though it didn’t have any training wheels. It’ll fit mommy. I’ll hold it. Ok, Ryan. As you can see we strapped the bike to the top of the trailer with an old bicycle tube.

How Benjamin insists on riding his bike on the street to the park.
How Mommy cringes and wants to say NO to all requests. Don’t you want to ride in the trailer???
Honestly…
Teaching our kids to ride has been one of the most fulfilling things we’ve done as parents (yet). It’s so empowering for them to learn to ride. My youngest is 3 and has just learned to ride with no training wheels this weekend. For me, it’s also been one of the scariest things I’ve done…since I’ve now empowered them with a mode of transportation that does not involve me.
Forcing me to just let go. Release the fears so that they might fly! Trust them. As a mom, this is SO HARD TO DO. I can’t protect their every movement my entire life.
Who wants to share about this? Am I alone in wanting to keep them safe, unharmed and completely under my wing?
On another note:
Isn’t it amazing how the right time makes it SO EASY. He is so proud. His arms go up in the air like he just won a race!

How did we teach them so young?
DITCH THOSE TRAINING WHEELS!
Kids don’t need bikes with training wheels. Period. It simply prepares them to ride when a tricycle would do the same them and be more sturdy. We’ve had fantastic luck using these pedal less bikes. You can put a young 2 year old on one of these and they do great! Have them practice on grass. Kids will tell you their ready!! Pushing them too early leads to tears of frustration. Why rush it anyway?!

Life is good. We are ready for our next adventure! A family ride that is longer than half a mile, maybe? I see bikes in our future for a long time to come.
Dreaming of a cycling tour in Italy when they are about 10.
