Running In The Rain

This morning I looked out my window and saw a horrible sight – RAIN (“Boo!” “Hiss!”)! I had a 4 mile run planned, but the weather was not motivating me to get outside at all!
I am training for the Disney World Marathon, which is only about six weeks away. So, I realized skipping out on my run wasn’t a good idea if I want to cross the finish line in one piece. Rain is a fact of life in Maryland during the winter and I need to find a way where precipitation and I can live in peace.
Despite the rain, I made the decision to go ahead with my run, but I always keep a few tips in mind while running in the rain.
- Wear a visor. I’d like to think of my visor as a “Face Umbrella”. Visors do a great job of keeping the water out of your eyes in the rain.

- Make sure the layers closest to your body are sweat drying “wick wear”, but wear a waterproof jacket on top. This will keep you from overheating or getting too wet!
- Slow down! When the sidewalks are wet and slippery I slow down significantly and pay careful attention to where I step. I give myself enough credit for actually getting out in the rain – I don’t need to break any time records too!

- Watch the puddles – you don’t want to spend the second half of your run listening to you feet “squish, squash” in a wet shoe.
- Have fun! This is always one of the most important rules of running. Don’t take it too seriously – this is running, not rocket science. Enjoy a few wet miles, then get inside and warm up with a nice shower and hot breakfast.
