What I’ve Learned Teaching Yoga to Kids
What others are reading:
“See Mommy, I can do Down Dog!” “I can make a sandwich” or “Here is Cobra pose!” These are great things to hear as a mommy and as a yoga teacher. Although, I’m just starting out on the process of teaching yoga to children, I’ve learned a lot in the last few months.
Children love yoga! They love learning new poses and they love to show-off “their yoga”. The children who seem to love it the most are the youngest ones ages 3 to 6, but, I believe they all love it to a certain extent.
What do they love best about yoga?

The silly names of the poses, the stories we tell, and the songs we sing. Yoga can help the children learn about body awareness. It can empower them. For the littlest ones, it’s giving them vocabulary along with body awareness. As they get older, they enjoy bigger challenges- like tree pose and triangle. And as they get into the lower elementary years, it helps them so down and relearn body awareness. Yoga has SO much to offer everyone that when I have the opportunity to teach yoga, I learn as much as they do!
When my own children are especially excitable after dinner, we like to use this DVD to calm them down. Both my children love it and will do the entire video (only 30 minutes) on their own! It’s geared toward their level, they can do it all with no problem and get kind of “giddy” that they can do it.
Here we demonstrate tree pose for you!

Yoga for kids has been one of the most challenging, but, most fun things I’ve ever done! And, teaching the concepts of yoga will be a livelong lesson for them and me.
